My fly of preference when casting to these finicky fish is either a # 10 Lite Brite Zonker streamer, # 10 Beadhead Sparkle Olive or Claret Wooly Bugger or a # 10 Sparkle Shad Streamer. I can not emphasize enough that in order for this small lake to produce quality fishing, care must be exercised in catching and releasing fish. I made a few brief and uneventful trips to Discovery Park Lake and the ponds at Cosmo Dog Park. There were catches of trout and small bass, but not as exciting as the quantity and size of fish to be found in the cooler months. I hope for blue gill or small bass that may provide forage for larger fish. In these hard economic times, the lakes also supply a nutritious food source and the satisfaction of having caught your own supper. I do not write about my intense dislike with living in Arizona to simply air my gripes in cyber-space. This nice bass was the result of top water action courtesy of a deer hair popper. Both species patiently biding their time by eating themselves to adult size; waiting for summer when they will once again dominate the lakes. Twenty-nine teams participated in a tournament on Lake Havasu over two days on Sept. 25-26. We pay our taxes and then must pay a user-fee in the form of a permit or license to enjoy that which WE own. With the stocking of Colorado farm-raised trout that first occurred the week of November 15th, the Urban System again basks in its popular status. So spectacular is the scenery and so profound is the experience of being at these locations, that in addition to fishing, I often filmed my martial arts videos in these environments. On one memorable day, I was startled out of my fly fishing revery by a large bird of prey (too quick for me to identify) that dive-bombed the middle of the lake and erupted from the water to fly off with a fish in its talons. Several people, including myself having been shaken from our dogged fishing determination by a loud splash upon the otherwise calm surface of the lake. The best pattern again seems to generally be a large dark nymph in front of a red nymph on the tail end. As to Urban Lake selection, the three closest lakes to my home which was in San Tan Valley were: Veteran’s Oasis, Water Ranch and a small Urban Pond in Gilbert. Although reports have slowed as Christmas creeps, the fishing likely has not slowed at certain low- to mid-elevation lakes. High lakes stocking schedule - Mid-Willamette District June 21, 2019. Biweekly stocking of cat fish was still in effect this month. Due to limited fly casting opportunities caused by the shoreline vegetation, I opted for a bait-casting bass pole and had good success with a top water Rebel Pop-R cast very close to the reeds and “popped” along the surface.
